Over 200 people a year lose their lives at work in Britain. Around 150,000 non-fatal injuries are reported each year and an estimated 2 million suffer from ill health caused or made worse by work.

Health and Safety at work is so important. Let’s imagine that you as an employer haven’t undertaken a risk assessment and one of your employees injures themselves at work and has to have time off due to an oversight on your part. Well, firstly there is the obvious distress to the injured party as well as their family.

Maybe the rest of your team start to have doubts about you as an employer, as it may appear to them that you don’t consider their wellbeing...financially you are out of pocket because you have to hire additional staff whilst the injured party is off on sick leave and there is always the potential for a personal injury claim against you if the accident arose as a result of your negligence or breach of statutory duty.

You may get a visit from the Health and Safety Executive or your local authority to make sure that the working environment that you have set up is in accordance with The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. They have the power to close down your business if they deem it to be an unsafe working environment.
